A Pacific White-Sided Dolphin Finds a New Home
In a heartwarming turn of events, a Pacific white-sided dolphin, once a companion to Lolita the orca at the Miami Seaquarium, has embarked on a new journey.
Following Lolita’s recent passing, this 40-year-old aquatic mammal has been relocated to SeaWorld San Antonio, where he will join fellow members of his species. This captivating transition signifies a fresh start for our finned friend, known as Li’i.
Reuniting with Old Friends
Li’i won’t be alone in his new home. He will be reuniting with Pacific white-sided dolphins he had previously shared his life with, as announced by the park on their official Facebook page. SeaWorld San Antonio proudly stands as one of the two facilities in the United States dedicated to the care of this remarkable species, highlighting their commitment to marine life conservation.
A Bittersweet Farewell
The move stems from the heartfelt desire to provide Li’i with a nurturing environment surrounded by peers of his own kind. The Seaquarium, once Lolita’s home, shared this sentiment, acknowledging that while they will deeply miss Li’i, they believe this relocation is in his best interest.
Remembering Lolita
Lolita, also affectionately known as Tokitae or Toki, passed away on August 18th after spending 53 years in captivity. Her death, attributed to a renal condition, marked the end of an era. Animal rights activists had long advocated for her freedom, and discussions about her potential move to a natural sea pen in the Pacific Northwest, supported by Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay, had been underway.
