Cats Protection Urges Welsh Pet Lovers to Support Compulsory Microchipping of Cats

Cats Protection, a leading feline welfare charity, is calling upon pet lovers in Wales to join its campaign for the compulsory microchipping of cats. While this measure has already become law in England, there are currently no plans to introduce it in Wales. Cats Protection believes that mandatory microchipping would have a significant impact on cat welfare in Wales, especially considering that their recent CATS report for 2022 revealed that over a quarter (28%) of cats in Wales remain unmicrochipped.

Supporting Cat Welfare in Wales

Welsh animal lovers are being urged to rally behind this cause by utilizing an online form on Cats Protection’s website to contact their Members of the Senedd (MS) and request their support for mandatory microchipping. Daryl Gordon, Cats Protection’s Advocacy & Government Relations Officer for Wales, emphasizes the importance of this issue by highlighting that microchipping is already compulsory for dogs throughout the entire UK, and from next year, it will also be mandatory for cats in England. However, it is crucial to ensure that cats in Wales receive the same level of protection and care.

The Benefits of Microchipping

Obligatory microchipping of pet cats would bring numerous advantages and enhance their overall welfare. Firstly, it would significantly increase the chances of reuniting lost or missing cats with their owners. Microchips serve as a permanent form of identification and greatly improve the likelihood of a successful reunion.

Moreover, microchipping plays a crucial role in identifying cats involved in road accidents, providing closure for owners, and aiding in the prevention of unnecessary suffering. Additionally, it alleviates the burden on animal charities, who often struggle to locate the owners of stray or lost cats that are not microchipped despite their best efforts.
