If your mother cat has a new litter of kittens, you’ve undoubtedly been advised to keep them away from male cats by well-meaning relatives and family. Although it is true that male cats are renowned kitten murderers, this does not imply that male cats never behave fatherly.
Typical Tom Behavior
Domesticated male cats, as well as wild male cats, aren’t renowned for being good fathers. Tomcats don’t usually become engaged in the rearing of kittens, other than siring as many as possible. Male cats have been known to murder kittens, typically those that were not their offspring. This conduct harkens back to impulses from a bygone era when murdering a competitor’s offspring would prevent the opponent from spreading his genes throughout the countryside, giving the murderer a greater opportunity of furthering his own genetic agenda.
Anything Is Possible
Not all male cats murder kittens; in fact, some have been found to assist in the care of their own offspring by cleaning and playing with them. People have even reported seeing their tomcats appear with litters of kittens in tow as if to show their people that they were fulfilling their fatherly duties.
Females Are More Helpful
Female cats often assist their friends and relatives in caring for the young ones, despite the fact that male cats aren’t renowned for being the most helpful when it comes to caring for infants. Some female cats serve as midwives, attending births and cleaning up after the kittens. Female cats have been known to “babysit,” keeping an eye on and even nursing the offspring of another cat. Mama cats often foster kittens that aren’t their own, even taking in newborns from other species such as squirrels, raccoons, and rabbits.
Playing It Safe
If you have both male and female cats in your household, it’s better to avoid allowing the male cat unrestricted access to the babies. If you think your tomcat has fatherly tendencies, you may gradually introduce him to the pups once they’ve grown a little older, around the six to eight-week point. However, be prepared to act if he displays even the tiniest sign of aggressiveness, and keep him away from Mama and her kids.
