Hairy Hippopotamus’: Scooter, the Chinese Crested, Crowned World’s Ugliest Dog
A Rescued Chinese Crested Takes the Title of World’s Ugliest Dog
Scooter, a seven-year-old Chinese Crested dog, has captured the hearts of judges and earned the title of the world’s ugliest dog. Rescued from the brink of euthanasia, Scooter’s distinctive features include a shock-headed, mohawk-like hairdo and a tongue that perpetually hangs loose from his mouth. Notably, his hind legs are reversed, and his petite, gray tail is wispy, adding to his unique appearance.
A Resemblance to a ‘Hairy Hippopotamus’
One of the judges in the competition, Catherine Liang, compared Scooter’s striking look to that of a “hairy hippopotamus.” The judges were particularly drawn to Scooter’s ability to take care of himself, which further endeared him to their hearts.
A Second Chance at Life with a Loving Adoptive Family
Scooter’s story took a fortunate turn when Linda Elmquist adopted him after he was brought to an animal control center in Arizona by a breeder, destined for euthanasia. Elmquist felt an instant connection with Scooter and decided to give him a chance at a better life. Despite his physical challenges, Scooter has adapted and now uses a wheel cart to assist with mobility. However, he can balance and walk on his two front feet, showcasing his resilience and determination.
Celebrating Scooter’s Triumph
As the winner of the world’s ugliest dog title, Scooter received a prize of US$1,500 (RM7,026) and a well-deserved trophy. This recognition not only celebrates Scooter’s distinctive appearance but also serves as a testament to the power of love, compassion, and second chances.
