Stray Dog Outsmarts Every Trap for 71 Days, but His Rescuer Refuses to Give Up

Last Updated on August 20, 2026 by Fumipets

For more than two months, Wally survived in a Walmart parking lot, surrounded by passing cars, unfamiliar faces, and the constant noise of people coming and going. The frightened stray dog kept his distance whenever anyone tried to approach, relying on caution to protect himself in a world he did not yet trust. But among the many people who crossed his path, one compassionate rescuer saw more than a dog hiding from humans. Jasmine Lawson saw an animal who deserved patience, safety, and a chance to discover what it felt like to finally be loved.

Wally was incredibly elusive. Every attempt to get close had to be carefully planned, since pushing him too quickly could frighten him and undo any progress Jasmine had made. After her first rescue attempt failed, Jasmine turned to a specialized device known as the Missy Trap. She hoped it would allow Wally to enter safely without requiring her to approach him directly.

On day 18, it appeared that her patience had finally paid off. Wally stepped inside the trap, but the sound of the magnetic gate startled him before he could be secured. He escaped once again.

More Than 40 Days of Building Trust

Rather than rushing into another attempt, Jasmine changed her approach. She understood that catching Wally was not simply about getting him inside a trap. He needed to feel safe enough to stay there.

For more than 40 days, she fed Wally inside the trap without activating its mechanism. Meal after meal, he was allowed to enter, eat, and leave without anything frightening happening.

It was a slow process, but that was exactly what Wally needed. Each peaceful visit helped turn a place he once associated with danger into something familiar and predictable. Jasmine continued showing up, even without knowing exactly when her efforts would succeed. Her consistency gave the frightened dog something he may not have experienced in a long time: a person willing to move at his pace.

By day 70, Jasmine sensed that Wally was finally ready. She set the trap and waited, hoping that weeks of careful conditioning had given him enough confidence to step inside once more. Then, at 5:03 a.m., the notification she had been waiting more than two months to receive finally arrived. Wally had been caught safely.

The rescue marked the end of his lonely days in the parking lot, but it also became the beginning of something much bigger. Jasmine officially adopted Wally, giving the once-wary stray a permanent home and a family of his own.

His transformation was not the result of a single dramatic rescue attempt. It happened through dozens of quiet moments when Jasmine returned, fed him, respected his fear, and showed him that he could trust her.

When asked what Wally might say if he could understand everything she had done for him, Jasmine believed he would simply be grateful. After spending so much time surviving on his own, Wally finally had the safe and loving life he had been missing.

For Jasmine, those 71 days ultimately led to something worth every early morning and setback. Wally no longer needed to run from the person trying to save him. He could finally rest beside the person who became his family.
