The stairs are right there; Mom is asking nicely, but Alfie has made his position very clear: absolutely not. The Golden Retriever is sitting snugly in his owner’s lap on the stair landing, looking at the steps whenever she asks him to go down, then turning straight back into her.
In the @alfiesworld.1 video, Mom gives him a gentle nudge and tries again, but Alfie responds by tucking himself closer and nuzzling into her neck. She gives him a kiss, looks toward the camera, and finally admits, “You don’t want to.” Alfie seems happy enough with that decision. This Golden Retriever puppy is clearly scared of stairs, and today he will not be attempting to climb them.
Alfie’s stair update finds him tucked safely into his owner’s arms
Mom starts with a simple request. “Go down the stairs, bubba. Go on.” Alfie looks toward the steps. But that’s about as far as he gets. The text on the video says, “Update: still scared of stairs,” and there isn’t much evidence that this particular update is going to end with Alfie heading downstairs.
Mom tells him softly that she understands he is a bit scared, then gives him a kiss. She tries again a few seconds later, leaning forward and encouraging him to get off her lap. Alfie responds by doing the exact opposite. The dog cuddles closer with his parent, turns his head away from the stairs, and buries himself against Mom’s neck.
Mom looks at the camera. “You don’t want to.” And there is no argument from Alfie. The caption asks, “They get less scary soon, right?” and more than 15,000 people had liked the video in less than 12 hours. The comments are full of people taking Alfie’s side. One person suggested carrying him everywhere forever, while another declared the stairs “clearly evil” and told him he could just live upstairs.
Someone else blamed the “cardio aspect” of going downstairs. One Golden Retriever owner shared a very different approach, saying they taught their dog by putting a tiny piece of cheese on every step. Another viewer suggested sitting with Alfie on each step for 10 minutes at a time, or letting him watch another dog use the stairs. For now, though, Alfie seems to have found a much easier option: cuddles with mom.
