Devon Duck Dons Bow-Tie, Drinks Pint, Duels Dog!

In the quaint corners of Devon, England, a surprising bar brawl occurred involving an unusual local celebrity – Star, a bow-tie-wearing, ale-loving duck, resulting in an unexpected veterinary visit.

Star: The Pub-Loving, Bow-Tie-Wearing Duck

Star isn’t your ordinary mallard. Often seen accompanying his owner, Barrie Hayman, to the array of local pubs, Star has earned his fame not only for his stylish bow-tie but also for his refined taste in real ale.

An Unusual Taste for Ale

Hayman, who has nurtured Star since he was a chick – even carrying him in his pocket – noticed the duck’s unique taste for real ale, leading to Star’s frequent appearances at the local watering holes.

An Unexpected Brawl at The Old Courthouse Inn

While Star’s pub visits were often greeted with joy and amusement, a recent visit to The Old Courthouse Inn led to an unforeseen feud. Meggie, Hayman’s dog, found herself in a confrontation with Star, resulting in a bar brawl with the duck suffering injuries to his beak.

In recounting the incident to Somerset Live, Hayman reported, “Star pushed his luck too far and Meggie snapped – splitting Star’s bottom beak right down the middle.

He gave her a stare, then promptly stood on her back. It was not pretty and not nice. We were so scared we would lose Star.”

The Aftermath: Rush to the Vet

Following the unforeseen confrontation, Star was immediately rushed to the vet and placed under anesthesia. A procedure always risky for ducks and other small animals. Thankfully, Star, the tough and resilient bird that he is, seemed to have emerged okay.

Reflecting on his unique bond with Star, Hayman revealed, “He just won’t leave me and so we go everywhere together. I’ve not trained him to follow me.

He just seems to like it and he is one fantastic duck. He loves to come to the pub, where everyone loves him. He is such a personality and attracts so much attention.”
