Hero VIP Club Members Helped Draco Find A Family & His New Mom Find Joy Again

Some rescue dogs need a second chance at finding a family. Sometimes, the person who welcomes them home needs a chance to feel hopeful again, too.

For Draco, formerly known as Tyson while in the care of Bosque Animal Rescue Kennels (BARK), that person was Dana. She was grieving the loss of Gunner, the rescue dog who had shaped her life, her interests, and even her career. Adopting another dog was far from her plans.

But a chance meeting with Draco stayed with her. And thanks to the rescue partners and compassionate supporters who help dogs reach new opportunities, including iHeartDogs Hero VIP Club members, an overlooked dog was there when she was ready to open her heart.

Two Brothers Waiting For Their Chance

Draco’s story began alongside his brother Tony, now known as Ripp. The brothers were about seven or eight months old when they were found wandering along a county road in Texas. A kind woman brought them to safety and contacted BARK.

For six months, the young dogs waited without finding adopters. Their rescuers believed their black coats and pit bull-type appearance contributed to them being overlooked.

Ripp eventually found a family who adored him. When we shared his happy ending, his brother was still waiting in foster care for a home of his own. Now, Draco has his own story to tell.

The Rescue Dog Who Changed Dana’s Life

Long before Dana met Draco, there was Gunner. Her first dog was a rescue who had spent around three years in shelters and had nearly been euthanized twice. Dana saw his picture, fell in love, and began a journey that would change far more than his address.

Working with Gunner challenged her to learn about training and canine conditioning. Together, they progressed toward competition, and he inspired her to explore pet photography, record YouTube videos, and improve her drawings of dogs. Eventually, those interests helped lead her to become a business owner serving other people and their pets.

Although Border Collies are her heart breed, Gunner ensured she would always have a special affection for a blocky-headed dog. When he passed away in June, Dana lost a companion and the spark behind so much of what she loved.

“My whole life revolves around my dogs,” she explained.

Birthdays, Christmas gifts, photo sessions, and an activity jar filled with things to do together were all part of that life. Losing Gunner left an enormous absence.

A Farmers Market Meeting She Could Not Forget

About two and a half to three months after Gunner’s passing, Dana attended a farmer’s market with her pet products. Fields of Hope was across from her, and she spent time with a dog they knew as Tundra, the former Tyson she would eventually name Draco.

She enjoyed being with him so much that she couldn’t stop thinking about him afterward. But the connection frightened her.

His personality was different from Gunner’s, yet his appearance, voice, and expressions brought back powerful memories. Dana worried that she might compare them or find those reminders too painful.

About a week later, Audrey from Fields of Hope reached out. Draco wasn’t getting adoption interest. Would Dana consider adopting him, fostering him, or helping him find a home?

At first, Dana’s grief and her desire to give him a chance pulled her in different directions. As the days passed, though, she found herself hoping nobody else would adopt him. She already wanted him to be hers.

Making Room For Another Dog To Love

Dana began thinking about the life she and Gunner had built together. Would he want her to stop doing the things they loved? Would he want fear to keep her from giving another dog a chance?

“He wouldn’t want me to be afraid,” she said.

About a week after Audrey’s call, Dana called back to say she wanted to adopt Draco. The people who had been caring for him were thrilled. His foster had hoped Dana would choose him, seeing his potential and imagining a home where he could be a cherished companion with opportunities to learn and grow.

Today, Draco is part of Dana’s family alongside two Border Collies: little Amo and big Buddy.

Draco Helped Bring Her Spark Back

Welcoming Draco home gave Dana a new dog to get to know and a new relationship to build. Soon, she felt drawn back to training sessions, recording videos, taking photos, and drawing.

“After getting him, it’s like he brought my spark back,” she shared.

There are still tender moments. Sometimes his sounds or the way he dreams remind her so strongly of Gunner that, for an instant, she forgets who is beside her. But the resentment she feared never came. Instead, she finds herself smiling and telling Draco that he reminds her of someone she loved very much.

Gunner remains part of her life through everything he inspired. Now, Draco is helping her enjoy those things again while building memories of his own.
