Human Learns Shelter Dog’s Behavior Is Reminder of the Life He Once Had With Someone He Loved

You might think a dog choosing the car floor over a comfortable seat is simply a matter of preference. That was the assumption until a shelter volunteer learned the touching reason Kermit always curled up beneath the dashboard. A message from someone who knew his past revealed the habit wasn’t random at all. It was one of the few routines he still carried from the life he shared with his late owner.

Shelter dog still curls up on the car floorboard because it reminds him of the life he had

Cassondra Christman, a volunteer at the Maui Humane Society, recently shared an emotional Instagram video revealing the touching story behind one shelter dog’s unusual habit during car rides.

The dog, named Kermit, had been struggling since arriving at the shelter. According to Christman, he showed clear signs of “kennel stress.” Although he had slowly begun warming up to people, the busy shelter environment had become increasingly overwhelming for him.

Wanting to give him a break, Christman decided to take Kermit outside and let him spend some quiet time in her car. What happened next caught her completely by surprise.

Instead of hopping onto the passenger seat like many dogs would, Kermit calmly crawled underneath the glove compartment and curled up on the floorboard. Christman gently encouraged him several times to climb onto the seat, but he showed no interest.

What’s more, he seemed completely at ease resting in the small space. So, she decided to leave him there while they sat together in the parking lot.

As Kermit relaxed, Christman received an unexpected Instagram message from someone who had known him before he entered the shelter. The person shared that Kermit’s owner had passed away. They also explained that whenever the pair traveled together, the pup always rode curled up at his owner’s feet.

Suddenly, the pup’s behavior made perfect sense. As the text displayed in the video reads, “Maybe it reminded him of the life he used to have.” For the next hour, Christman simply let Kermit rest where he felt safest, giving him the quiet moment he appeared to need. Reflecting on the incident, she said she hopes “one day Kermit has a home where everything feels familiar again.”
