Morning arrives, Dino opens his eyes, and it’s the same room he’s been waking up in for more than three years. Shared by @the.invisible.8, this emotional video shines a light on a shelter dog whose routine has barely changed in 1,259 days. Yet the people who know him best say that the number tells only part of the story. Behind the kennel door is a gentle dog who has spent years learning to trust again, and who still gets excited every time a familiar volunteer stops by to say hello.
Shelter dog has spent 1,259 days waiting for someone to choose him
Dino originally arrived at a New York facility on a freezing January night as a terrified stray. Ever since that day, dedicated volunteers have been working hard to make this overlooked pup visible to the public. In the video, we see the sweet shelter dog sleeping on a cot bed inside his familiar enclosure. He gently stirs, opens his large eyes, and looks out into the hallway quite listlessly. The on-screen text explains that this facility has essentially become his entire world.
Suddenly, he turns his head toward a familiar face. His mood lifts instantly as he realizes a favorite volunteer is standing right outside his door. He hops off his bed and trots over to receive some tasty treats through the wire mesh.
According to the shelter bio, he tried to make himself completely invisible by hiding under blankets when he first arrived. Trust does not always come instantly for this misunderstood boy because of his mysterious past. Little by little, he is learning that the outside world isn’t actually a terrifying place. He actually blossoms once he feels secure around people he knows.
Dino needs a calm, adult-only home where he can be the absolute only pet. He sometimes guards his food bowl out of habit, so a patient owner will need to provide ongoing guidance. The gut-wrenching video helped this long-term shelter dog gain over 1,100 likes in just seven hours.
Dino is currently waiting at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter in Wantagh, Long Island. Spending a quick moment to share his story can easily help him find his ultimate hero.
