Olive, part of a litter of abandoned puppies, had been named after pizza toppings by shelter staff. “I asked to hold her, and she just kind of stole my heart,” Zosche recalled. “She cried when they took her back to her kennel, so I put in an application right there to adopt her. They called me the next day, saying I was approved.”

Zosche and Crystal had experienced the heartache of losing their previous dog, Sophie, to kidney disease just five months ago. Their hearts had finally healed enough to love again. When Zosche returned to pick up Olive, she could sense the dog’s nervousness about her new journey. The car ride home was accompanied by trembling, a manifestation of Olive’s anxious anticipation.
